A data acquisition unit (1) is of a portable unit type containing a microprocessor and built in memory. The unit is mounted on bracket in a road vehicle and has a direct connection with a data generator (2) that also is based upon a microprocessor. Coupled to the data generator is a pulse generator indicating travel data, an identification unit (9), a clock and a data receiver coupled to a satellite navigation system The pulses from the generator are processed to determine distance and speed data for recording during a journey. Data can be transferred (4) into a data storage unit (5) having disc or tape, together with RAM memory. USE/ADVANTAGE - Provides logging of travel information.
