The self-protecting firing tube, on the article to be protected, has an electrical igniter in the base and contains a missile with propellant and explosive charges. An arrester line (20) attached to the tube releases a spring-loaded firing pin for the explosive charge. Its length is slightly less than the distance for which the missile is fired. The line is housed in a chamber (18) in the missile, and is accommodated in windings forming layers one behind the other in the axial direction. The windings can run in alternate directions, and they can be stabilised by a spiral supporting housing, this typically consisting of a separating strip (30) coiled together with the line. The strip can be of plastics or spring steel, while the line can be secured to it over its whole length. ADVANTAGE - Minimises effect of line-unwinding forces on missile when in flight, with consequent more accurate aiming.
