The recording needle (11) is driven by a motor (4) with a first free-wheel clutch (22) actuated in one direction of rotation when a first cam (12) converts the rotation into radial movement of the needle over the recording chart. A second free-wheel clutch (17) is actuated in the opposite direction of rotation when a second cam (1,9) converts the rotation into straight-line motion of the needle at right angles to the chart surface. ADVANTAGE - Enables single motor to move needle both axially and radially. Timing errors and unnecessary marks on recording chart are avoided, and needle is movable radially and vertically by single drive to reduce current consumption and mfg. cost.
