A receiver coil located at a distance from a transmission coil receives the signals from the transmission coil. An evaluation unit processes the useful signal component of the received signals which also contain an unknown, primary field effect component caused by the uncontrollable deviations of the receiver coil from a defined position in relation to the transmission coil. An additional coil is rigidly connected to the transmission coil as an additional transmission coil or to the receiver coil as an additional receiver coil. The evaluation unit uses the signals from the additional coil unit to suppress the primary field effect. USE/ADVANTAGE - E.g. for searching for metal objects underground. Eliminates primary field effects and enables detection threshold to be minimised.
