An adaptive control system has a reference input (w) coupled via a filter (6) to a regulating system (1) via a switching stage (7) that allows changeover between the feedback generating input (5) and a unit (8) that allows the reference to be effectively modified. The control unit (8) receives an initialising input (9) and a feedback (10) value. The adjustment made by the control unit (8) is based upon the input, with the regulator units (5, 6) only being activated when a predetermined time period has passed.
