Data is exchanged between engine and transmission control modules (1,2), an electronic traction control module (3) and another electronic control module (4), and two test sets, one (5) of which is specific to the manufacturer while the other (6) communicates with the controllers in accordance with the ISO 9141 (RTM) standard via a protocol converter (7). Test sets having different standards of protocol (8,9) can communicate through the converter or can be connected directly to the control modules via a plug-and-socket connector (10) with a safety device (11) preventing incorrect connection. ADVANTAGE - Test equipment with different data traffic protocols can be implemented easily for use in conjunction with electronic controllers eg for engine, transmission, and traction control on board vehicle.
