The watertight or fluid tight emergency cover may be placed over a drain (2) in a floor or a roadway. The drain has a lid (3) consisting of a set of rectangular section bars (5) with slits (6) between them through which water may drain. The emergency cover (7) consists of a flat fluid-tight plate with a ring of soft sealing rubber or closed cell plastics foam (8) on its underside. This forms a fluid-tight seal with the surrounding floor (1). A fastening spindle (10) extends through a small hole in the centre of the plate. A screw (15) on the spindle has a sealing washer (11) and may be screwed down to compress the sealing ring (8). A T-shaped catch (12,14) on the bottom of the spindle can engage the bars of the lid (3).
