Control information is transmitted between two control devices (GS,MS) to detect an interface error, e.g. a short circuit to earth. The second control device (MS) transmits a response signal back to the first control device (GS), simulating an earth short circuit interface error, when faulty information is received from the first control device. Pref. the first control device comprises a drive control, the second control device comprising an engine control incorporated in a motor vehicle with automatic transmission. ADVANTAGE - Prevents damage caused by interface error.
