Process for the preparation of dialkylamines of the general formula I in which R<1> and R<2> denote C1- to C16-alkyl, by reaction of monoalkylamines of the general formula II in which R<1> denotes C1- to C16-alkyl, with alcohols R<2>-OH in the presence of a hydrogenation/dehydrogenation catalyst containing copper chromite-alkaline earth metal chromite, by carrying out the reaction in liquid phase in a molar ratio of amine to alcohol of 1.5 : 1 to 50 : 1 in the presence of the water formed in the reaction at temperatures from 180 to 210 DEG C and pressures from 40 to 120 bar.
