In a method and a device for controlling the drive motor of a pile-raising device on a sheet-fed printing machine, a motor (15) is provided in a first operating mode A with a high nominal torque and a low nominal speed and in a second operating mode B with a low nominal torque and a high nominal speed. When the motor (15) is switched on to raise or lower the pile (4) and (5), the first operating mode A is selected and switched over to the second operating mode B after a predetermined time interval after switching-on when the speed during raising of the pile (4) and (5) has exceeded a predetermined value and, during lowering of the pile (4) and (5), has not exceeded the predetermined value.
