The object of the invention is to make available a novel fire-extinguishing method which, using a small amount of extinguishing liquid, is able to extinguish a fire and prevent it from flaring up again. When fighting house fires, the procedure is first to force the fire back by spraying with a liquid mist, and thereafter directing a concentrated jet of liquid at the seat of the fire. According to the invention, a pistol-like device 1 can be used which has a hydraulic accumulator 5 as drive unit and a spray head 3 which initially, when the pressure in the accumulator is high, emits a liquid mist and later, when the pressure in the accumulator has fallen, emits a concentrated jet of liquid. <IMAGE>
