A shear thickening composition having a viscosity at room temperature at 12 to 80 pascal seconds which comprises by weight 10 to 45 % of an alkali metal silicate; 1 to 45 % of an inorganic or organic compound having an alkali metal cation; 0 to 5,0 % of at least one organic detergent active material; and water.
