PURPOSE:To provide a new microorganism useful for treatments for converting trichloroethylene into non-toxic substances because of aerobically decomposing the trichloroethylene to perfectly remove the halogen without by-producing intermediate products such as vinyl chloride. CONSTITUTION:The trichloroethylene-decomposing Pseudomonas.putida KWI-9 (FERM P-13109) having a phenol-utilizing ability and not having a toluene- utilizing ability. The microorganism is preferably obtained by screening microorganisms by a method comprising adding phenol to separation sources such as river water or soil, isolating several strains from the thus accumulated phenol-decomposing bacteria, and subsequently examining the trichloroethylene- decomposing abilities of the bacteria, respectively, in a trichloroethylene- containing inorganic medium. |
