Ring alkylation of a polar-substituted aromatic compound or a heterocyclic compound is effected in presence of a catalyst comprising a crystalline aluminosilicate having exchangeable cations and an ordered internal structure with a defined pore size of at least 6</>rA. Examples describe the reaction of (1) aniline with propylene, (2) phenol with methanol, (3) diphenylamine with cyclohexene, (4) thiophene with tert.-butyl alcohol, (5) pyridine with ethyl chloride.ALSO:The following aluminosilicates are used as alkylation catalysts:-(1) mordenite is reacted with HCl until the product after calcination analyses 80.1% SiO2, 13.4% Al2O3, 0.3% Na and 1.54% Ca and has a pore size 6.6 </>rA; (2) molecular sieve 13X is base-exchanged with didymium chloride until the product contains 26.5% rare earth oxides, 0.22% Na after calcination and has a pore size 13 </>rA. |
