Before disconnecting the on-board battery (3), the temporary substitute battery (4) is connected via a self-checking unit (5). One pair of leads (8a) is connected to the substitute battery using toothed clips, while the other (8b) supplies the vehicle circuits (2) through, e.g., a cigar-lighter socket in the vehicle. Connections to the vehicle are checked for integrity and polarity by a shunt-connected LED tell-tale (D1). The interconnection with the substitute battery is completed, in the unit, through a diode bridge, ensuring correct polarity, which is confirmed by a second tell-tale (D2). Overload protection is provided by a series-connected thermistor, in which a third tell-tale (D3) is illuminated, if the set threshold of the thermistor is exceeded. Optionally polarised relays replace the diode bridge, and duplicating these produces a reversible unit. ADVANTAGE - Simplifies battery substitution to maintain devices with memories which would be wiped by supply interruption.
