New antibacterial peptides (I) are (a) of the type present in 'paleopterous' insects, pref. of the order Odonata, esp. Aeschna cyanea, or (b) are inducible in such insects by injection of bacteria or by traumatisation, e.g. septic wounding, extraction of (I) and opt. fractionation of the extract to separate (I) according to their antibacterial activity. Also claimed are: (1) nucleotide sequences (II) bearing genetic information corresp. to the amino acids of (I), sequences capable of hybridising with (II) under stringent conditions, and corresp. complementary and RNA sequences; (2) expression and/or cloning vectors contg. at least a fragment of the sequences of (1), and hosts transformed with these vectors; and (3) plant cells whose genome is modified by the presence of genes coding for (I). USE - (I) are active against Gram-positive and -negative bacteria. They may be used for medical purposes, e.g. for treating eye, ear, buccal, dental or gynaecological infections, for veterinary purposes, esp. for treating mastitis, as agricultural bactericides and as food preservatives.
