PURPOSE:To facilitate manufacture and installation, and obtain high amplification factor with a small-sized amplifier, regarding a planar waveguide type optical amplifier which amlifies a light passing through an optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:A trench 4d is formed in the longitudinal direction of a core 4 for optical amplification, and glass material 5 is buried in the trench 4d. The glass material is formed by vitrifying alkylsilicate solution in which erbium (Er) is mixed. The trench 4d is so formed that the central part 5b of the glass member 5 is rectilinear along the core 4, and the end portions 5a, 5c are tapered. |
