Metallic cover for nuclear fuel rod has an internal and/or external surface coating comprising a mixt. or cpd. contg. at least two oxides selected from: Al2O3; CeO2; Nb2O5; SiO2, TiO2, UO2+x, V2O7; Y2O3; and ZrO2 (pref. Al2O3, Nb205, SiO2, TiO2 and ZrO2). The coating is produced by CVD or PVD, pref. by thermal CVD assisted by a microwave plasma generated in the mixt. of precursor gases. In the case of PVD, a laser beam is focussed onto ADVANTAGE - The coating traps the fission products released during irradiation and does not release them, even at temps. above 1600 deg. C or reactor core meltdown.
