Device for incorporation in a water distribution system, has as least two uniformly spaced apart electrodes (3, 4), which may be provided with baffles (8), and through which flows the liq. to be treated, and an electronic controller (7) which produces an alternating voltage in its signal generation section. The electronic controller (7), independent of the water hardness, exhibits an oscillating electrode current and density and opt. there is control input to the amplifier unit, from a throughput measurement (9), that the overall electrode performance offers maximum treatment of hardness sources in liquids in respect of lime scaling. USE/ADVANTAGE - Prevention of lime scale formation in water pipes, etc. Treatment of water, under turbulent flow conditions, with alternating electric current signals at selected frequencies and also with rapidly alternating current densities, to modify the crystal habit of hardness causing agents, e.g. calcium and magnesium carbonates, without adversely affecting the water quality.
