The laser has a number of laser diodes (1) in direct contact with the surface of the solid state laser material, or laser crystal (2). The laser diodes act as leaky waveguides with the emitted laser diode radiation coupled directly with the laser crystal along the active zones (5), to provide direct pumping light for stimulating laser emission. Pref. the substrate layer thickness of the laser diodes and the refractive indices, dielectric constants and magnetic permeabilities of the substrate layer and active zone of each diode are matched to the laser crystal to provide the direct transfer of the laser diode radiation. ADVANTAGE - Eliminates pumping light losses and provides optimal frequency stability.
