A vehicle catalytic converter (10) consists of a number of parallel honeycomb passages (16) and is incorporated within an outer housing (11, 12). The passages (16) are lined (17) by an electrically heated foil insulated by an intermediate aluminium oxide layer (15) containing platinum layers and also electrically heated. The novelty is that the electrical heating layer (17) is screen printed using thick film technology directly onto the electrically insulating intermediate layer onto at least a part of the metal foil (15). Pref., the electrically insulating intermediate layer is also the layer having the catalytic action. A further protective coat is applied to the electrically-conducting heating layer (17). USE/ADVANTAGE - The assembly is an automotive catalytic converter. The assembly functions without degrading the flow of hot gases through the catalytic passages.
