Monitoring of optical communications fibres

In a device for detecting the presence of a bend (5) used for the illicit tapping of communications through an optical fibre (1) a pilot beam of different frequency from the communications beam is generated by a source (8) and the relative attenuation of the two beams is measured at the receiving end. A change indicates the presence of a bend.
