A rectal block device, for use when a patient is unable to avoid making uncontrolled faecal emissions of a largely liquid or slurry-like nature, includes a tubular member, for insertion through the anus into the lower bowl, which carries on its outer surface at least two inflatable cuffs. These cuffs are spaced longitudinally from one another along the tubular member. The device also includes control means for alternately inflating one or the other cuff into contact with the bowel wall so as to make a seal therewith. Tissue necrosis is substantially avoided because the area of tissue adjacent to one cuff is relieved of pressure while the other cuff effects the sealing function, and vice versa. <IMAGE> |
