PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as a raw material for liquid crystal polymers and an intermediate for agrichemicals and medicines in high yield by combining a bromobenzene derivative with a 2-chlorobenzene derivative and subjecting these derivatives to dehalogenocoupling. CONSTITUTION:A 3-or 4-substituted bromobenzene derivative of formula I (R is lower alkyl or lower alkoxy) is made to react with a 2-substituted chlorobenzene derivative of formula II (R' is cyano or alkoxycarbonyl) in the presence of triphenylphosphine, an anhydrous nickel compound and a reducing metal in pyridine at 0-250 deg.C to provide the objective compound of formula III. The compound of formula I and the compound of formula II are preferably used in a molar ratio of 1:1 and fine powdery zinc is preferably used as the reducing metal. The compound of formula III is obtained in a high selectivity exceeding 70%. |
