PURPOSE:To effectively absorb and relax deformation force due to heat under the cooperation work of both of a first inclined rectangular corrugated strip material and a second rectangular corrugated strip material, in an exhaust gas cleaning device composed of a honeycomb element, by forming both strip materials so as to satisfy specific conditions. CONSTITUTION:An exhaust gas cleaning device is constituted of a honeycomb element obtained by superposing a first inclined rectangular cocorrugated strip material B1 made of a thin-walled metal plate characterized in that the straight line connecting the peak intermediate point of each of corrugations and the intermediate point of two troughs of each of them has a desired oblique angle with respect to the vertical line in the advance direction of the corrugations and having the rectangular corrugations with pitch width P1, and height H1 and a second rectangular corrugated strip material B2 made of a thin-walled metal plate and having rectangular corrugations with pitch width P2 and height H2 one upon another in a mutual contact state and supporting an exhaust gas purifying catalyst having a large number of reticulated air passages. The first inclined corrugated strip material B1 are formed so as to satisfy the condition of 1/2 P2>=P1 and H2>H1.
