Nematic liquid crystal composition containing mainly smectic compounds, characterized in that it contains at least one compound, in an amount between 10 and 90% by weight, of a formula selected from the group of formulas from 1 to 6, where R stands for an alkyl or alkoxy group containing between 1 and 15 atoms of carbon in a normal or a branched chain, X stand for the -NCS, -Cl, -F, -CF3 or <IMAGE> group, and contains at least one in an amount completing to 100% by weight, where X stands for the -CN or -NO2 group.<IMAGE>
