A halogen cooker having a pair of halogen lamps for generating infrared rays on the inside of a tray coated with a thermal insulation material on the inner portion of a cooker housing, a glass ceramic plate with a cooking area for positioning a cooking dish on the cooker housing, and an output controlling operating unit, includes a photo-sensitive means installed on the bottom center of the tray for sensing the amount of the infrared rays generated from the halogen lamps to be reflected from the cooking dish, a photo-converting means for converting the reflected amount of the infrared rays into an electrical signal, and a controlling unit for sensing the positioning of the cooking dish on the cooking area according to the converted signal. Thus, burning of the apparatus due to the lack of the cooking dish and the lowered cooking efficiency degraded by the cooking dish deviated from the cooking area are prevented.
