A video camera-recorder receives cassettes loaded onto a pair of spigots. The tape is drawn out of the cassette by a pair of guide rollers moved along tracks until contact is made with a helical scan head drum. Each spool is associated with a tape braking system for retaining the spools in position when not in operation. The wind-up spool (11) is associated with a mode switching gear wheel (30). The integral pinion is engaged by the teeth of a brake element (20) that is a pivot mounted (21) link. The link operates against a torsion spring (24) to effect release. The release is provided by displacement of a pin (23). ADVANTAGE - Prevents magnetic tape from deviating from set path.
