The apparatus includes a card reader, an operating portion, a VIP arrival relay, a VIP operation relay, an elevator field card reader input accept relay, a VIP operating display lamp, an inter-car card reader input accept relay for performing car service to a VIP objective by a VIP operation switch to automatically carry out car calling and door opening/closing. The method of operating the elevator is executed by a VIP operation registering step, a VIP operation lamp lightening and a car service operating step to open a door to the registered story, a VIP operation executing step to the objective story when a predetermined conditions are satisfied, a VIP operation registration releasing and control operation performing step or a VIP operation continuing step, and a normal operation executing step to allow prompt service to be available and to go to a permissive story while controlling a story without a guard, thereby maximizing the scope of service.
