A fixing device having a heating roller and a pressure roller each of which has an elastic layer provided thereon and which touch each other to form a nip. The elastic layer of the heating roller is thinner than that of the pressure roller, and/or the surface effective hardness of the heating roller is 85 degrees or less and that of the pressure roller 85 degrees or greater. The nip is substantially flat. The portion of a recording member exiting the nip proceeds along a path substantially away from the heating roller.
