<p>PURPOSE: To identify dimensional or operational problems in pilger forming as early as possible, for the purpose of minimizing damage to a pilger forming device or production of articles outside the tolerance. CONSTITUTION: A pilger forming device is equipped with a mandrel for supporting a workpiece 20 to be elongated and thinned, a pair of dies 42 for abutting on the workpiece, and a drive mechanism 25 for rolling the dies 42 over the workpiece under pressure while the workpiece 20 is periodically rotated and advanced, and sensors 62, 64, 66 are directed at the workpiece and produce signals reflecting displacement of the workpiece in rotation, axial displacement and transverse displacement. The signals can be compared to nominal standards, graphed and displayed, for visualizing operational conditions. The axial and rotational displacement of the workpiece are encoded by the sensors 64, 66, while the transverse displacement of the workpiece in the upstream of the dies is encoded by the pair of sensors 62 disposed at right angles.</p> |
