In order to reduce cross-chrominance and cross-luminance an adaptive comB FIlter circuit is used with four function sets for separating the chrominance signal from a composite signal. The circuit contains four 32, 33, 34, 35 delay lines with a length 1H, by means of which a sample window can be created comprising vertical samples P-2, P-1, P, P1, P2 from five successive lines n-2, n-1, n, n+1, n+2. The samples are taken via possible multiplication devices 43, 44, 45, 46, 47 to the input of a first 36, second 37 and third 38 summation device. In this way three combing sets can be used, from the results of which one result is selected as the output signal for the chrominance C. The separation of the composite signal can also be carried out at the fourth function set, at which a sample which is to be examined is low-pass and bandpass filtered in the traditional way. <IMAGE>
