A furnace is claimed for holding molten metal at temperature, of the type that can tilt around an axis (8) and equipped with a burner (11). The furnace has a symmetrical cylindrical form with respect to the horizontal axis (8) and incorporates, at one axial end, an opening (10) for the introduction of the charge and, at the other axial end, a central oxy-fuel burner (11) and two diametrically opposed openings (12(1), 12(2)) for discharging the metal. Some means (9, 7) are provided to tilt the furnace (1) around the horizontal axis (8) either side of a median position (13). It also incorporates some means for providing a pulsation to at least one of the fluids feeding the oxy-fuel burner (11). The method of operating the furnace is also claimed and comprises the following stages:- sealing one (12(1)) of the discharge outlets; placing the furnace in a first extreme position, where the non-sealed discharge outlet (12(2)) is situated above the level of the molten charge in the furnace; and the furnace is tilted around the horizontal axis (8) between the first extreme position and a second extreme position symmetric with the first extreme position with respect to a vertical plane (13). USE/ADVANTAGE - For holding molten metal at temperature. The furnace is of simple construction that is easy and efficient to operate and has low capital cost. It may also be used as a melting furnace.
