PURPOSE:To obtain the wavelength converting element which provides optical modulation by stably generating a 2nd higher harmonic by using laser light as a fundamental wave. CONSTITUTION:This wavelength converting element generates higher harmonic laser light by passing the fundamental wave laser light having specific wavelength through an optical waveguide 2 formed of a nonlinear medium on or in a substrate 1 and has a light guide 2 which is varied in waveguide width L in a taper shape to have different waveguide width L and an electrode 4. When no voltage is impressed to the electrode 4, the fundamental wave is cut off and is radiated in the substrate 1 and not made incident on a 2nd higher harmonic generation part, so no 2nd higher harmonic is generated, but when a voltage is impressed, a waveguide mode state is entered and then the fundamental wave is made incident on the 2nd higher harmonic generation part to generate a 2nd higher harmonic, so that the 2nd higher harmonic projection light which is projected from the optical waveguide 2 can be modulated by turning ON and OFF the voltage. |
