The decentralised software environment provides enhancement of the system communication power and is based upon two data processing systems (A, B). One of the units (A) has the user space separated from the core space (55) with the system separated (57) from the other. The one system (A) has a decentralised stream server (56) coupled to a multiplexer (58). The multiplexer has connections to remote drivers and connects with the second processing system. This also has a multiplexer (72) and a connection to a stream server (68). A software interface between the two processors enables the drive in the second processor to be operated.
