A wheel flange extends to a workpiece axis (Z) in integral joining with a surface extending in cylindrical fashion in parallel and coaxial with the axis (2). This surface is cold deformed by the crude method to exhibit an outer gear tooth (13) extending from the real running wheel geometry. The wall strength of the surface is changed by cold deformation. The distance (16) of the root line (14) to the nearest point of the inner surface (15) of the finished outer surface (12) is smaller than the wall strength of the latter so that the root line of the outer gear tooth runs always within the finished surface (12) to which the gear wheel belongs. The rotation of the workpiece with thee roller heads used in the prodn. process can be synchronised by mechanical and/or electronic equipment. ADVANTAGE - Avoids prodn. of wall strength that is too weak for initiating starting of i.c. engine by electromotor energised by car battery.
