The use of a 5S penem compound of general formula (I) wherein n is 0 or 1, R<2> is hydrogen or a substituent group, R<3> is an ester- or amide-forming group, and R<1> is hydrogen or an organic group linked via carbon and wherein the group -COR<3> is substantially stable toward in-vivo hydrolysis, in the form of its 5S isomer, as an inhibitor of the bacterial enzyme leader peptidase 1.
