To grind and sort waste material where useful matter can be recovered from waste from two or more components, the ground material together with a carrier air stream is carried through the grid of a shredder. A conveyor belt carries the ground material through a lock and the air stream is detached before the lock through a flow deflection to travel below the matter dropping off the conveyor belt so that matter which does not float is separated from the heavy matter. Pref., the heavy material drops into a bunker through gravity and the matter which does not float easily is deflected from the heavy material by the lateral winnowing effect to pass into a separate bunker, assisted by adjustable separating plates. The floating matter, with dust particles, is sucked by the carrier air stream to be passed through a cyclone and/or filter, and the separated air is returned to the shredder. The reduced material is carried through by a bucket wheel, and the separated matter is passed on to further separate processing stations. The matter which does not float is further reduced in size. The conveyor belt speed and the rotary speed of the bucket wheel are mechanically coupled. The conveyor is a plate belt, with cross bars to form a lock with the lid of the housing. The carrier air speed is adjusted, where it applies the lateral winnowing action, according to operating conditions at 3-20 m/s with an air stream height level of 15-40 cm.
