Formulation (I) for removing permanent wave soln. active substances from the skin of hair styling agent users, bottles and manufacturers comprises (a) 0.01-10.00 wt% maleic acid and/or salts thereof and/or neutralised fumaric acid (calculated as acids); (b) 0.01-1.00 polyethylene oxide (mol.wt. 1000000-3000000); and (c) 1.00-30.00 at least one surfactant. The pH of (I) lies in the acidic range. (C) are pref. anionic and/or ampholytic and/or non-ionic and/or cationic surfactants. (I) pref. contains ethereal oils, synthetic perfume oils or plant extracts, skin care components such as alpha-bisabolol or panthenol, buffers such as phosphates or acetates, preservatives such as sorbitates, salicylates and/or benzoates, calcium carbonate and amorphous silica. The pH is pref. 4.5-6.5. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) help prevent skin irritations, e.g. itching, reddening, dryness, eczema or open sores, caused by ammoniacal and/or carbonate cpds. in permanent wave solns. for hair. (I) give better protection than gloves and do not dry out the skin, unlike neutralisation soaps. In an example, an anionic surfactant based formulation having a pH of 5.5 comprised 12 wt% Na laurylether sulphate, 0.2 maleic acid, 0.12 ammonium hydroxide (25% soln.), 0.04 polyethylene oxide (mol.wt. 3000000), 0.20 perfume oil and 87.44 H2O.
