The mains-operated vacuum cleaner has a disinfecting unit using heat and/or light radiation. Externally-mounted on the suction head, there is a battery for a circuit generating either ultra-violet or infra-red light, the light being transmitted to the suction head via optical fibres. Hot air (from infra-red radiation) is also transmitted to the head by a tube. The whole package of tubes and fibres is a one-piece unit. Between the suction head and the hose to the dust chamber is a spring-tensioned safety switch for the disinfecting unit. It is held onto the head in pillion fashion by snap catches. ADVANTAGE - Unit is perfectly safe and is compact in size.
