Airbag safety system for vehicle - has gas generator mounted inside air conditioning duct to ensure optimum storage temperatures

The gas generator (7) is mounted at the rear of the airbag unit and is located in a cut-out of the air duct (4) leading to the air grilles inside the vehicle. This ensures that the gas generator is kept within a small temp. range by being heated or cooled depending on the conditions outside the vehicle. The air duct each side of the gas generator is fitted with flaps (8) which close off the duct section using the excess pressure released by the gas generator. For mounting on a steering wheel the corresp. gas generator is linked to an airflow tapped off the air duct and also fitted with gas control flaps. ADVANTAGE - Effective operation of gas generator irrespective of outside temp., simple mounting, no separate heaters required.
