The machine cuts the strip in the lengthwise direction and spreads the portions apart, being particularly for a packing machine. Spreading is by hollow adjustable deflector rails with peripheral compressed-air jets. An adjustable rail (6,6') is provided for each strip section. The jets (8,9) are confined to the portions of the rails round which the strip sections pass. Where the strip is deflected through 180 deg., the first row of jets (8) is at roughly 15 deg. to the tangential plane (12) of th incoming strip (4), while a second row (9) is at 90 deg. from the first. ADVANTAGE - The emerging air works only in the wrap-round area.
