When the cap is fixed on the bottle neck the elastic seal fits tight between a bearing face on the inner cap wall and a sealing face on the bottle neck. The bearing face (7) has at least one indentation (9) which forms a hollow cavity and connects with the outside air. In the event of excess pressure inside the bottle a section of the seal enters the indentation to release a path to allow the pressure to escape. The cap (1) pref. has a stop (16) so that when the cap is inserted on the bottle neck it is restricted to a defined position. The seal can be designed so that it restricts the movement of the cap when fitting onto the bottle neck. The seal and cap can be made of the same material USE/ADVANTAGE - The extent of the overpressure which the seal lets escape is independent of the mfr. tolerances of the cap and the force applied when fixing the cap on the bottle neck.
