PRODUCTION OF ITACONIC ACID

PURPOSE:To produce itaconic acid in high productivity by using a new high- temperature resistant strain belonging to Aspergillus terreus, thereby enabling the culture at a high temperature, decreasing the amount of cooling water and reducing the risk of microbial contamination. CONSTITUTION:A high-temperature resistant strain belonging to Aspergillus terreus, capable of producing itaconic acid, having a maximum specific proliferation rate (mu) of >=0.01hr<-1> at 40 deg.C and culturable at >=40 deg.C [e.g. Aspergillus terreus KO3152 (FERM P-12966)] is cultured and the objective compound produced and accumulated in the medium is collected. The high-temperature resistant strain can be produced e.g. by the mutagenic treatment of Aspergillus terreus IFO6365 with nitrosoguanidine. The culture of the high-temperature resistant strain is preferably carried out at 39-41 deg.C.
