[Also in Divisions B6 and D1] Tray like articles, having corrugations at the regions of curvature of their side walls, are formed from foldable sheet material, e.g. card, by co-operating male and female dies 14, 15 carrying about their peripheries co-operating complementary ridged and grooved members 16, 18. In operation, a sheet is indexed between the dies and the female die lowered so that edge 21 of member 16 co-operates with a blade 22 fixed about the male die to cut a blank therefrom, the blank thus formed being gripped between the surfaces 17, 19 of the members 16 and 18 respectively. Further downward movement of the female die causes the member 18 to move downwards relative to die 14, against the bias of a spring, so that the sheet is drawn over the stationary male die, the edges of the sheet being progressively withdrawn from between the members 16 and 18 and thus corrugated. When square or rectangular trays are being formed the members 16 and 18 are only ridged and grooved in the regions of the comers of the tray. In the case of a circular tray, however, the whole of the co-operating surfaces of the members are ridged and grooved. The surfaces 17 and 19 are so formed as to diverge in the outward radial direction, thus facilitating slippage of the sheet. |
