A flexible elastomeric foam sheet 10 has either a series of chain stitches 22 or a simple warp structure 11, 12, 13 knitted through it thereby restricting the extensibility of the sheet, Figs. 1 and 4, not shown. The stitches may be formed in the sheet whilst the sheet is extended whereafter the sheet is relaxed. Transverse threads 24 may be laid in on the sheet and secured beneath the knitted loops to restrict the transverse extensibility of the sheet. In addition transverse threads 25 may be laid in on top of the threads 24 and likewise secured together with the latter but capable of being brushed or napped to provide a raised fibrous surface. A further layer of warp knitted fabric 28 may be secured to the underside of the foam sheet by the chain stitches or the knitted structure. The foam sheet may be of polyurethane and the securing threads may be of nylon as may be the transverse reinforcing thread 24. The laid in yarn 25 may be of cotton capable of being napped. Alternatively the laid in yarn may be a blend of mohair and acrylic yarns or a blend of acrylic, rayon and nylon yarns. The backing fabric 28 may be an acetate fabric. |
