In a boiling water reactor, employing heavy water as a coolant and moderator, the core is supported in a steel pressure vessel mounted within a pre-stressed concrete vessel. While cold, the steel vessel does not fully occupy the internal space within the concrete vessel. After starting the reactor, the steel vessel is subjected to both a high temperature and an internal pressure and is expanded so as to contact the concrete to which the pressure load is then transferred. |
