PURPOSE:To obtain a powdery activated carbon having increased specific surface area by using a formed raw material consisting of a coal-based isotropic pitch carbon fiber having fiber diameter smaller than a specific level, subjecting the raw material to infusibilization, carbonization and activation and finely crushing the product. CONSTITUTION:A coal-based isotropic pitch carbon fiber having fiber diameter of <=40mum (preferably <=25mum) is infusibilized in O2 and N2 atmosphere, carbonized and activated in CO2 or H2 atmosphere at 800-1100C for 5-420min. The activated carbon is finely crushed with a crusher such as a vibration mill to obtain the objective powdery activated carbon having an average particle diameter of about 5-20mum and a BET specific surface area of about 1,500-2,000m<2>/g. |
