PURPOSE: To provide a system and method which compensate influence of a recording medium 12 like a film upon picture data 14 retrieved from the recording medium. CONSTITUTION: Red light 22, green light 24, blue light 26, and infrared light 20 successively pass the film 12 having an exposed picture and reach a system where corresponding pictures are acquired. The infrared picture maps the position, the boundary, and the intensity of a defect 16 of the medium. This map is used in combination with other acquired pictures to obtain a picture 36, which is not affected by the defect of the film, from the film. The influence of the defect is separated from red, green, and blue spectrums by, for example, the operation which separates infrared picture data in each picture element. If the defect practically hinders passage of infrared light, the infrared picture map of the defect is used together with an automatic interpolation algorithm which is used more effectively to accurately detect the boundary of the defect. |
