PURPOSE:To extremely facilitate the extension and the exchange of the terminal equipments and to improve the reliability of an ATM exchange system. CONSTITUTION:The terminal equipments D2 and D3 are connected in series to a circuit exchange switch SW via the high speed circuits 31 and 32, a terminal equipment D1, and the high speed circuits 33, 34, 35 and 36. The cells CL of the low speed side are multiplexed and at the same time slows successively to the upstream side together with a token TK. The equipment D1 receives the input of an identification signal (a) from the SW and an identification signal (c) from the downstream side and therefore recognizes its own position set at the most upstream point. Then the equipment D1 separates a cell from the TK to send the cell to the SW and to send the TK back to the downstream side respectively. The equipment D2 receives the input of only the signal (c) and therefore recognizes its own position set at the midstream point to send the returned TK back to the downstream side as it is. Meanwhile the equipment D3 receives no input of both signals (a) and (c) and therefore recongizes its own position set at the most downstream point to send the cell to the upstream side with the TK returned from the upstream side and to produce a new TK against the erasion of the TK.
